The scene with Agnes is great - Agnes as usual is such a doll; "we feel let down" - awww shes so right!! Do you really think Maddie's white stuff speech is a sufficient explanation for marrying Walter? I mean, I do get what she means about white stuff/real milk/first kiss all the time, but still it doesn't make so much sense, because she herself keeps telling Agnes that she was fully prepared to raise the child by herself; she points out that she didn't have to marry. Seriously, how dependable can a man be who is marrying a woman after 3 days in Vegas??? She knew nothing about him, and after all he could have been an axe murderer. How could she know he was dependable? I know this is all due to let's say not-so-good writing, but still we have to deal with it and thats why I'm questioning it.

Bottom line she was terrified that and if she did marry David and put her heart and life on the line with him he would eventually leave and hurt her badly. That is the crux of her whole dilemma. I will say it again the writers mirrored Maddie's thoughts and feelings in Come Back Little Shiska when he said that David didn't look like the type who would be in it for the long haul etc.
She married Walter as a barrier against David. She knew DAvid could seduce her and sway her to his way of thinking without much effort so if she was married to another man she couldn't marry him! And then he couldn't eventually leave her...if they weren't together. Twisted logic but this is Maddie we are discussing.

Okay, I get why she ran away from David. But why did she marry at all, and why did she marry Walter? I repeat: she could not know he was dependable. She could not know what he was looking for -- and, what was he looking for btw?

She didn't acre if he was dependable. If he left it wouldn't hurt her. She married him so she wouldn't be swept away with false promises (she believed) from David. If you are married you cannot marry someone else. She didn't care about Walter he truly was a PAWN.

So then what she told Agnes was just bullshit? The whole thing about white stuff making her feel safe because it's there for you? And if she did that really (marry Walter only as a shield against David) and not even pretending for herself that she had fallen in love with him... wow, that was pretty, pretty selfish!!

Yes it was selfish. And don't feel bad for Walter he knew she was in love with another man.

No I don't feel bad for Walter either. But that doesn't make her actions better or less selfish.

No, of course they don't. As I said before (I think it might have been on our Facebook board) I think the way Maddie was raised and how her folks handled her with kid gloves AND her fame as a model might have desensitized her to others' feelings. She thought the world evolved around her.

That makes sense, also if you look at how her parents tiptoed around her while she was in Chicago - I really didn't like how she treated them btw. But on the other hand, on other occasions she seemed very attentive towards other people's feelings (eg Molly's in Bride of Tupperman - or was that more because she wanted to make a point against David? Whoops, selfish again?) And then, the way she kept all those employees that really didn't work very much or very effectively, at some point even paying them from her own money probably - that was very very generous of her. Ah, Maddie Hayes, the enigma... but here, in this arc, she acted in a selfish way, I think.

She realized that these people would lose there jobs and that is why she kept them on..she wasn't selfish in that way just with feelings.
I don't like the way she treated her parents either. She was acting like a moody teenager and she was a grown woman! And she was selfish by keeping her feelings to herself and not opening up but it wasn't done out of malice.
The same way she used Walter and hurt David wasn't done out of spite or malice but again to protect HER feelings.

Agree hated how she treated her parents too, Her parents should have been tougher, they were afraid of her, why? it was their house her father should have said enough what is going on? We are happy you are home but you need to talk to us. she could have said smth true you dont have to tell your parents your whole business but if you are moping around thier house and snapping at them you should tell them smth.

True Maddie did figure oh if i marry Walter or anyone David has to leave me alone now. yup she used Waler as a shield. Because she knew that probably - if David really tried - she wouldn't have been able to resist him.
