How many times did Maddie say or imply that she should have sold the agency. That she would have been better off if she never kept the agency open or that she would be happier if she never lost her money? Since I just watched this episode the other day I will use a scene from "Those Lips, Those Lies." In this episode, Richie's girlfriend's money was supposedly stolen and she was left with nothing. Maddie of course can relate to her predicament. In one scene Maddie seems unhappy and she says something like. 'Sometimes I wonder how much happier I'd be if I never lost my money.' David looks at her and says. 'But then you wouldn't have met me." She says deadpan. 'I rest my case." Funny but sad that she still thought that way after 5 years together. But seriously they probably would have both been a lot happier. Sad/

Yes it is sad she felt that way (although I'm not sure she really felt it - you know that she often said those hurtful things, she's been doing that from the beginning, and later she regretted them), and her constant repeat of that "if only..." lament is sometimes understandable, but mostly annoying, inappropriate and always insensitive towards David's feelings.
It's not that his life changed only for the better after her appearance in it... he might have thought on more than one occasion "I would be happier if I never laid eyes on you" - that "toilet seat" was just sensitive enough to keep those thoughts to himself, unlike her.
Interesting thread btw, yes we could list the episodes. Lady In The Iron Mask is one of the earlier ones, although I don't know if it's the first time she regretted keeping the agency open. Probably not.

No she said it in Gunfight when she realized they had no clients and she told him she should just close the place. I think she said it in some way in most every episode of season 1. Never did she utter the words in Season 3 but she said it in MHGM I think in the hospital.

Never in season 3? Wow! LOL Well I think it's kinda understandable in the very early episodes, when she was still new to all the stuff, inexperienced in the whole detective business and in business in general - nobody to pamper her and take care of everything; suddenly she was in charge of everything, and the financial situation was not easy. I've said it before, and I repeat it willingly: she was a Saint for keeping all those employees that only cost her private money and didn't work at all!
In MGHM she said it too?? Darn, I watched it only a few weeks ago, and I don't even remember it! You think in the hospital scene? Well, although that is a hysterical scene and I love it, she's a total bitch in that scene, of course! Not only because of how she treated David and what she said to him, but mostly because of poor Terri!

Oh I don't think she ever meant it seriously - except maybe for the very beginning. She said it in anger most of the time, going over the line with her bad temper, as often.

Oh I agree! She never really meant it but in Season 3 she never even thought to utter those words in anger. But didn't she something alluding to meeting him during fight scene in IACM..3 years of bees beeing and ducks ducking..LOL

yes she said 2 years but then in THH Agnes tells her it is their 3 year anniversary! Now really couldn't they have done something with that?? David and her going out to celebrate Blue Moon's success? I would dearly love to knock their heads together! She was wallowing in her fears and insecurities and he was wallowing in..well I won't go there but they missed a perfect opportunity to have fun out of bed!

OMG I forgot about the anniversary!! You're right, another lost opportunity!! Crack their heads together is a very appealing thought indeed! (Do you practise this technique with your students? LOL) Btw why not go there? You're right, Maddie was wallowing in her fears and insecurities, and he was wallowing in his happiness... bad and sad that both were unable to see the respective reasons. Crack 'em!!

And I would like to crack the writers' heads together too. SO many lost opportunities to change the direction that killed the show!
