Another episode that never aired in Germany, I wonder why? It's not a bad one; it's not a great one either.
I've heard that all season 5 episodes could be watched in any order which is supposed to be an explanation for some of the inconsistencies; I was thinking that for this episode in some moments it would make sense to watch it before Shirts & Skins. For example, in that one (at least I think it is in Shirts & Skins) Maddie promises David she will stop always thinking the worst of him. Here she falls into that old bad habit again: she can't even believe that David has nothing to do with the havoc going on between MacGillicuddy, Herbert and basically the whole staff, but that's just a random point.
Then the way this case is handled: Maddie is claiming a few times "we are not taking this case!" as if that was hers to decide, and David is sneakily tricking her into investigating the case - why would he have to do that if they are equal partners? She couldn't order him around anymore, he'd just have to say "I'll take whatever case I want, partner!". Just a thought that this could be a pre-equal partners episode.
The episode is another example of how unfair the costume designers treated Cybill: David looks really hot here, the suits he's wearing are like painted on his perfect body; Maddie on the other hand is wearing high-collar blouses, floating long jackets and to some extent horrid colors - that baggy blue number, ick!!
As for the storyline itself, I think in this episode they both act pretty much in character, and there are a few things I really don't like or that make me sad.
David sounds pretty resigned (I don't find him mean here but quite detached) when he says in that first car talk that they talked their relationship to death, "we still do." True as it may be, it hurts to hear it. Maddie looks like punched in the gut, and both look very sobered in that moment. Not a very hopeful one.
The talk about what they have achieved in life, what they want to be remembered for etc. makes me cringe; again, Maddie tells David practically he has accomplished nothing in his life (which is only half the truth IMO - it might be true if you look at the current results, but it's not that he hasn't tried; if his wife hadn't cheated on him and if the first pregnancy hadn't gone wrong odds are good he'd have at least a family - not a bad accomplishment); and what bothers me most is her mantra-like "you don't know surface from substance"... she knows better than that, and it's really sickening how she keeps bringing it up again and again and again. I mean, Maddie's own accomplishment so far is her former celebrity & the money she has made out of it, so why does she always feel the need to put David's character down?
The second car talk on the other hand is a great Maddie moment - that is the golden-hearted Maddie we love and wished to see more often: I really love how she comforts him and how she's not giving him the told-you-so-speech.
Bert as Monsignore is hilarious, and in the final scene he really speaks a fine French you wouldn't expect from him! And his smile in the end at the exchange between David and Maddie is the cutest!
The planned trip to Paris doesn't give me personally so big a thrill - first of all (sorry, I can't help it) I don't like the way Maddie is being sarcastic about that invitation - "Congratulations!" - and her laugh when David says that they want him in Paris and he didn't make the rules looks false and isn't likeable at all JMO
The way he asks her to come with him and her reaction to it - sorry but to me that doesn't look like it's going to be the big reconciliation trip (which reminds me - I need to read Ville de copains again to soothe my soul ). His casual "You're coming with me, aren't ya?" and her enthusiasm about Paris (and not Paris with David) don't really turn me on; I see no romantic sparkle or eager anticipation in either of them.
