The first thing David should have done when he was released was call Maddie and propose but we know he didn't why? And why would he listen to her about not going to Chicago? When did he ever listen to her?
Oh new fanfic coming out about what would have happened if he went to take her home with him.

New fanfic? Great!!
Why didn't he call her to propose?? I think that's obvious. Because you don't propose by phone, JMO. He wanted to do it, and he wanted to do it face to face. When he heard her message how thankful and glad she was that he left her to sort things out all by herself, how much she appreciated it, he had the glimmer of hope that - if he handled it her way - she would come to her senses and back to him. A mistake, of course - he should have stayed true to his instincts.
Of course he never did what she wanted from him, but this was a different situation - he didn't want to provoke her, to tease her just for fun, as usually - this was way too serious. He wanted to get it right and do everything to please her.

And it blew up in his face. She would have listened to angry David..I think..She was over the top by then so who knows. Crying and being sad; when she could have stopped thinking and taken the plunge and been happy!

Agree - I think she might probably have listened to him. He should have gone, nevertheless I can't blame him for not going. He really tried to do what would be the most likely thing to bring her back to him, and made his decision, based on that. Awfully wrong.
