This episode had no redeeming value at all. It wasn't funny. It was crude, painful and unconscionable. AND Glenn wrote it??WTF was he thinking?? THE END!

The worst things happened afterwards though... them never mentioning the loss (well, after Yuk) and, the most superfluous cruelty, them never finding out (with us knowing it) that it was David's baby.

OK I'll use this thread for my review as the title is very appropriate. My thoughts on this episode, having it seen for the first time:
I don't like the intro - a little breaking of the fourth wall on the show is funny and clever, but this was extended far too long, and David's baggy suit - yuck!! Also, the ending of the intro, when Maddie finally shows up, just finishing her outfit (putting the earring in) - this could really have been to spite Cybill and her pregnancy: look, she's always late, always ruining our schedule etc. Not funny.
First thing to think when Maddie wakes up is: where the hell is David?? Maddie is alone and she seems to be happy with it? I don't get why they aren't living together; this is totally inconsistent to the ending of season four where it was clear that they were determined to overcome the past and start all over again. How many months have passed since then, two at least? I think by then they would have gotten to the point to agree to live together, even if they might have made it complicated. Makes no sense.
What also bothers me: throughout the whole episode I never get the feeling that they are actually a couple, so wtf??? We don't even see a hug, a kiss or any intimate gesture. Makes no sense either, and if they were not a couple the audience fucking deserved an explanation for it!!
The first appearance of Baby Hayes with Jerome is sweet, and I really like the scenes when he shows him his parents and speaks very affectionately of their passion for each other and of the impact the baby is supposed to have on their lives.
David and the nannies: seriously?? He acts like a complete asshole. I would have found that funny in the earlier seasons, there it would have been a total David thing to do. It reminds me of Bride Of Tupperman and Creatures when they were ogling the woman with binoculars. There it was funny and in character. But here? Assuming they were a couple (and I refuse to believe a different thing at this point) - yuck!! An absolute no-go, David, and the problem I'm having with it furthermore: I don't buy it. Yes, we all know that David could be crude, lewd etc. but I simply don't believe he would have acted like that towards Maddie when she was a) his lover and b) expecting his child (and I'm pretty sure he believed it was his in spite of all her objecting) or any child, for what it's worth. So, for me that scene was disgusting and not in character.
The Baby Hayes scene where the angel tells him that arguing is what they do and that they are old souls destined to fall in love over and over again is great.
The later scene in Maddie's office was sweet and as we wanted to see it, although I wish David would have shown more insight - hello, your woman is pregnant and in spite of still looking gorgeous (okay, let's not judge the dress) probably feels unattractive; she deserved a proper apology for the crap he pulled. Their hands on her belly - pure sweetness, but I still don't like that they seem to sit so far apart on that couch. In spite of the sweetness they don't look like a couple here either. Sweet, but not enough.
The Agnes/Bert scene was at least interesting - do Berts fears mirror David's thoughts? I don't think so, I don't think that David would be afraid to screw up as a dad, but maybe we're supposed to think that? It shows once more how David and Maddie could and should have dealt with their problems and respective fears and insecurities: voice them. Bert says straight out what bothers him which either David and Maddie never really were able to, and Agnes encourages him which helps him to overcome his fears and insecurities - also here, both David and Maddie were never able to do this for the other. Bittersweet.
Now I really like the song "Sunny side of the street", but that number was really inappropriate here, and I can't even come near to imagining how those of you have felt watching this and not knowing before that the baby was going to die. And then presented in such a way - cruel! The song "Baby Love" gives me the creeps as it seems to be writing on the wall for their relationship (see the other thread).
The baby shower - oh, it's so sad to see their happiness and how they actually enjoyed being together - here maybe you could say they act like a couple, even if the moments are very short.
The scene at the hospital was heartbreaking, and here in their pain I see them both at their most genuine and true to their characters, although already here the whole issue of the loss is handled way too lightly IMO - I don't think they would have shrugged it off like oh it wasn't meant to be, can you imagine me as a mother and me as a father? Yes, it's their way of dealing with hurt, but this would have cost a superhuman effort, and I don't think either of them would have been strong enough in that moment. Also, the nurse with her eerie "How's the patient?" is a little too much for me.
And their faces when she tells them that they can try again real soon - I really don't like them very much. The only thing I like about the ending is the last image where we see Baby Hayes having climbed the stairway to heaven - that's a comforting thought.
All in all - the episode doesn't make sense on so many levels IMO and is very sad of course, but I have to say that I see it kind of distanced already because I see too many inconsistencies to see them really as David and Maddie. It starts already here for me.

I can't understand why they weren't living together either but I guess Glenn had to write it this way to leave an opening for David's withdrawal. It would have been near impossible for him to abandon her and stay away if they were living in the same house.

Agree, that was probably the reason - and it makes no sense at all. It makes no sense that they were not living together IMO sad to say it, but this episode is the beginning of the end - technically, the show's creator was also its undertaker. Given the ending of season 4, they were on a good way to fix the mess, with Womb they started ruining it.

I agree this was the end. Notice they didn't even go to lunch together?? Glenn spited all the loyal fans and that's unforgivable

The show should have ended with Flesh

Yes, we could have lived with that. Flesh would have been a good ending, maybe with a little epilogue showing David, Maddie and the baby together, happily arguing, and some hint that David is definitely the father, like the kid has green eyes or something like that.
But -- I will dutifully and courageously go through the whole season 5 box and I will review every episode LOL
