Why do you think David thought Maddie had followed him to NY. When he is drinking in the cab he says to the cabdriver. 'And then there's this other woman. ...I don't know what's going through her mind.'
And why do you think Maddie didn't call him on the fact that he lied big time about 1) going to the funeral and 2) Tess being with another woman.
This was another episode where Maddie is a class act and tried to protect David.
One thing I don't understand is why he lied about it being a man. I mean if the woman who cheats on you is a lesbian it isn't your fault. And Tess was very young and came from a Catholic background so probably never even allowed any of those feelings to come to the surface until they moved to the Village in NY which was even at that time (David says early 70s) welcome to the homosexual population.

Why do you think David thought Maddie had followed him to NY. When he is drinking in the cab he says to the cabdriver. 'And then there's this other woman. ...I don't know what's going through her mind.' I think he thought she somehow cared about him but he couldn't quite puzzle it together. It surprised him. I think he was as confused about her feelings for him as she was about his feelings for her. 1) because she understood his reasons and didn't want to embarrass him or make him suffer by confronting him. 2) because it made no difference to her, what difference would it make? As David told the cab driver - another person in bed with your wife is another person in bed with your wife, the gender doesn't really matter. Agree! True. But remember, these were the eighties - free spirited and all, still homosexuality wasn't as accepted or as normal as it is today, I think. We know that David was an old-fashioned guy in his heart, and, as you said, they came both from a catholic background. I think that, even if of course it's not the fault of the man if your wife cheats on you with another woman because she discovered she's lesbian, but I can imagine that it makes the man feel less a man. Don't many men insult lesbians by saying well she just hasn't met the right man yet. I think it's a bit of a macho thing.
