OK I have my theories on why Maddie wanted to forget their lovemaking. Anybody else care to share with the class?

Ok i seriously believe it was due to the intensity of her feelings for him and the night of passion they just shared was probably very intense. It had been bubbling for 3 years for thme and to come together that way that night wasn't planned so it definitely threw her world off kilter. She knew she probably wanted him to keep doing those amazing thigns to her forever but was afraid thats all there was berween them so she got scared neeeded to get away from him threw out the word pact but she kept regretting it because she kept falling into bed with him. Maddie said in TRIP LOVE wasn't enough right? or it was too much and she could live with out it? Ok Sue i wanna hear your views!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Sandra and anyone else?

You know my views. I agree that she was scared to death of her feelings and that she was out of control and that David had the upper hand but I also think if David was more loving, tender the following morning (instead of glib and yes, smug) and helped to ease her embarrassment instead of adding to it (I remember you hitting a few hi cees yourself..) she may have been a little less nervous and unsure. She still may have needed time to process it and been antsy but she would have been more willing to give it a shot.

Yes Sue, we know your views and you know mine, so I won't repeat them all over again here sissy, in TTTM she said (paraphrasing) that if this was love she couldn't/didn't wanna do it because it was too hard work... found that out, huh? Grow up girl, that's exactly what love is -- hard work.

Oh, and as for the reasons for Maddie's behavior after the lovin'... I agree to 100 % with the ones you named, sissy. Those reasons IMO were deeply rooted in herself.

What I don't understand how was it so hard in a month? Love is hard when you live through problems together. They were in the honeymoon phase. If she thought it was hard then she would never be able to maintain a relationship with any man. OK I think he may have needed to do things differently and made her feel more sure, secure and less nervous being with him but I also agree that she was thrown off balance by the enormity of her feelings for David.(Yes someone she didn't believe she should be with and I don't think it had anything to do with his upbringing or education but in their vastly different lifestyles, outlook on life and personalities). She wanted safe and secure like a carousal ride what she got was a rollercoaster. One that she kept riding (literally and figuratively) and that is why she ran away.

I know Maddie says this in WGC while they are dancing but I think it shows how she thinks a relationship should be and why theirs is so wrong in her eyes...when she sees the couple kissing and looking happy..She says to David look at the couple I'm not sure of her exact words but something about their relationship being calm and safe and she says I like that. Wasn't his answer back 'I bet you do.' ? Typical David lol.

I also think that by "supposed to be with" she didn't mean their different background etc. but the differences between their personalities, ways of life, like you said. Well she did say the thing about it being too hard, and I also think she meant the rollercoaster, the constant friction. She also says that about with David it's always hot or cold with no in between, and that is too hard (work) for her, she can't "function" that way because she needs some middle, and with him there is no middle. She says he's beyond her limits. "This is too much work for me... this is too hard. Every second, every moment, every breath, every word is like some test... if this is love it's too hard, if this is love I'll live without it." The somehow detached way she says "So I love you... big surprise." gives me the chills. Now I can (to a certain point) understand the motivation about her being unsure, but in this scene she doesn't even question his love or his reliability - she clearly states that she's not willing to work on their love Sorry but I'll never be able to understand how you can be able to choose mediocrity over the real deal, even if the real deal means that you have to work your ass off to keep it going. I find it shallow. I don't think a person can ever be happy if they just "function".

They both think each other is giving them a test. That is funny; in a sad way. I wonder what she means about it being cold? We know what she means about being hot. He's beyond her limits. I find that flattering LOL She initially does say she is unwilling to work at it but then she says she needs time to think. Maddie often says things without thinking and I think David knew this. His first mistake was not planning the kind of evening that she wanted. He knew from way back to Symphony that she needed her date to plan the evening and take her somewhere without place mats on the table. So what does David do? He takes her to a laundromat. Why didn't he hire a limo, make reservations at a fancy restaurant. Take her to a piano bar. But he didn't make the effort. He thought he had her. He got fooled. Just as she got fooled when Annie came to town.

I see what you mean, but what she said remains - too hard to work out. And as you pointed out, Sue, where are those really hard times they had to work out?? I don't see them yet.
Well there have been a lot of speculations about that date... sure, he maybe didn't put enough effort to it. But we know that she had a negative attitude even before he showed up at her house -- we see that in the Joyce Brothers scene. Before she even had caught a glimpse of the sweater. I highly doubt he had a chance to satisfy her with any effort that night. I have the impression that she wanted her doubts to be confirmed to give her an excuse to end it all, even though in the office scene she looked happy when he asked her out. One of her deadly mood swings.
And sorry, but a ruined date cannot be the crucial reason for running away. I still insist the reason lay within herself -- the effort of working it out was simply too big for her; maybe as a former model she wasn't used to that, maybe all the men she had till then (even if there weren't many) had always gladly obliged her demands and expectations. She wasn't used to work for a relationship, wasn't used to investing heart and soul.

Oh I agree the dare wasn't the main reason she ran away just that it underscored all the turbulent feelings over David. I agree with you that she was also ambivalent about continuing the relationship because she couldn't control David; he actually controlled her and that scared her senseless! Oh I miss you already!

I agree with you girls. I do think Maddie made up her mind before David showed up .Hell in a way she made up her mind the morning after IACM but for a whole month she was able to be swayed by him . I agree she never had such intense feeling with anyone else. maybe there were mildly hot feelings as a High school/college student with Sam as young first love? and its a big maybe. Also she was used to boring men probably falling at her feet offering her the finer things? or them just coming out and worshipping her by telling her how beautiful she was . she knew David thought she was beautiful but he didnt fall at her feet all the time or ever ? he was boss before he was boss ya know? But even if David pulled out all the stops say limo etc do you think she would have accepted him forever right then and there?
