Let's talk about the (in my book) most intense and beautiful scene of this episode, the final scene. I love it for so many reasons, and it's on the list of my top 10 favorite scenes ever.
Don't you just love Agnes here? I love how she shakes her head at David's attempt to dictate a letter, always speaking her mind; I love how she refers to Maddie & David as mom & dad; perfectly matched by the way Maddie squeezes her arm lightly when she sends her out and the reassuring look she gives her - don't worry, kiddo, me and daddy are gonna work this out, and it's gonna be all right. Agnes' questioning look back to David, his barely perceptible nod -- perfection.
David: apart from the fact that he's drop-dead sexy in this scene, flung on that couch, I really like his attitude. He's attentive, but relaxed and open - of course, from the moment Maddie had made her entrance with her "I hope not" to Agnes' "Are you gonna leave us?", he knew she had come to make up. He let her have her say, without making it difficult for her - her apology was accepted without hesitation, but all the same, when she bent down to kiss his cheek, he let her come all the way by herself; she had to see that he was ready to forgive, but perfectly aware that she had done him wrong - that's backbone. And the final shot of his face says it all.
And Maddie: she simply shines in this scene, you can't but love and admire her here. I love how, without further ado, she offers her apology, and it's so heartfelt and sincere. That's backbone! She even offers an explanation that we should keep in mind for later, because she already admits that she never has met a man like David - and this time it is said in a positive light. I simply love her "I'm glad you're my partner, partner", and that kiss on the cheek was perfect. The last look she throws at him from under the door - wonderful.
