Do you really think her feelings for Sam (I refuse to call it love) could be conmpared in any way to the love she felt for David? Do you think they even came near? (No rhetorical or sarcastic question, I really want to know your thoughts about that) |
I think she may have loved, or thought she loved Sam, in a comfortable use to know him kind of way. He was a NSM and she was secure in his feelings. Her love for David was something she had never felt before. Passionate,intense..no I would never compare it to her feelings for Sam. She described how she felt about him to Agnes. He was like a first kiss but he always made her feel nervous, always unsure. She loved him madly, wildly with her heart, soul and body and he made her feel wild and out of control and all these things coupled with his inability to vocalize what she wanted to hear from him almost drove her completely insane.

And I don't believe Maddie felt any loyalty to Sam. She seemed to be a bit annoyed by his presence in certain scenes. I think this is because she wanted to feel something for him and when he wasn't around maybe she could talk herself into believing he was the "right" one but when they were together he bored her to tears and she kept thinking of David, Here she had Sam who she desperately wanted to love (but really didn't) offering her the moon and the stars while David (the man she did love but maybe didn't want to) was offering her cheese and peanut butter. I think the writers might have used the comparison of Sam cooking lamb to David only having cheese and peanut butter to offer her on purpose.

So you say she didn't really love Sam (what I think exactly). Although there are more forms of love... there's only one kind of love that should drive my decision to marry someone... the body, heart & soul thing. But maybe that's just me. She didn't feel loyalty towards Sam, otherwise she wouldn't have acted the way she did. But my point is - if she is seriously considering to marry him, she should have felt at least loyalty!! Yes that's probably what she felt although it's based on a completely exterior thing (that wonderful proposal). Where was Sam during the past years, when she had needed someone by her side? And who was by her side? Only because he offered her "to make it official" he was candidate number one... sorry, but I'll never understand that (I mean, I do understand her motivation, but I don't understand... understand? ). To me it's just sad and wrong.

I can understand where she is coming from but I can't understand it. I mean she may have been ready to settle down and Sam was offering her what she wanted. She may have thought she was thinking about his offer but deep down her decision was already made and part of her knew it. She may have led a content life with Sam in the long run but I don't believe she would have ever been truly happy wondering what could have been.

Yes I totally agree!! I truly believe that David was the love of her life - had she never met him she could have been happy with Sam (because she'd never have known what it means to be really happy). Or content would be the better word for it, you're right.
I might be hopelessly romantic, but I still believe you shouldn't marry the person you can live with, btu the person you can't live without. JMO

Oh I agree! And that was the mistake of my marriage...I could surely live without him.
